Jobs available in the Wabash Valley

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - More than 200,000 Hoosiers were living without jobs in July of 2012, but that doesn't mean jobs are not available in the Wabash Valley.

The Vigo County School Corporation and Union Hospital are two major supporters in employing thousands of local people.

Superintendent Danny Tanoos with the Vigo County School Corporation said since the economic downfall, they've successfully avoided laying-off any employees and hired 40 new teachers in 2012.

"It’s just a matter of going online and applying, calling us, seeing about availability and we like to hire local people and we like to maintain the economy and help out here locally,” said Tanoos.

Both Tanoos and Union Hospital officials said if you don't have a college education, there are jobs within their organizations for those with high school diplomas.

"Teaching assistants are always needed. We hire maintenance, custodial, secretarial. We’re really in need of bus drivers right now. So there are actually positions available in the school corporation as we speak today,” said Tanoos.

And, if an open position requires a degree, there are options for those who don’t have one.

Karen Rusk, Union Hospital said, "There are sources in the Wabash Valley that are affordable, educational sources to get you the basics knowledge you need to perform those positions quickly."

Which leaves possibilities for those who are a part of Indiana's 8.2 percent unemployment rate.
