TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Drought of 2012 has led to record crop insurance payouts in Indiana, according to a new report by Purdue University.
In all, Indiana grain farmers received about $1.04 billion in insurance payouts, more than double the previous record. About 75 percent of farmed acres in Indiana are insured, officials estimate.
The drought is expected to have other, lasting effects as well. Nationwide, experts predict price increases for meats and dairy products, though they say the price changes for other processed foods will likely be smaller.
