BOSTON - The Celtics may be the latest Boston sports team to own a media outlet that covers them.
On Friday, the financially struggling Boston Globe reported that Stephen Pagliuca , managing partner of the Celtics, was one of three local businessmen who had emerged as potential buyers of the paper, which the New York Times is actively trying to sell.
Pagliuca, who is the managing director of Bain Capital, also serves as a member of the NBA Board of Governors and the NBA Competition Committee.
No one really knows what the Globe is worth -- estimates range from nothing to $250 million -- but if Pagliuca does buy the newspaper, he would likely have to immediately address the obvious conflict of interest in his owning the Globe's sports section while presiding over one of the local teams.
The Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins already own the cable TV station New England Sports Network (NESN), which broadcasts both teams' games.
Other marriages of media and sports teams include the Chicago Tribune owning the Chicago Cubs since 1981; the New York Yankees controlling the Yankees Entertainment and Sports (YES) cable network; and Cablevision owning Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers.
