MARSHALL, Ill. (WTHI) - Another Wabash Valley city wants to bid for a role in FutureGen 2.0.
Marshall, Ill. joins the list of interested towns after officials in Mattoon declined to be a part of the new plans.
The Marshall mayor Ken Smith said the city has land that could be used as a storage site for the CO2 emissions. Smith plans to mail a letter expressing interest in the project on Tuesday.
Even though the new plans for FutureGen would mean fewer jobs at the storage site, Marshall welcomes any kind of economic development for the community.
"It'd help the tax base for Clark County, and jobs. We supported Mattoon whole heartedly. We're not trying to take anything away from them, never did. But if it's not going to their community, we'd discuss accepting it for here," Marshall Mayor Kevin Smith said.
Two other cities expressing interest in FutureGen 2.0 are Decatur and Springfield.
The U.S. Department of Energy now has a Web site asking for interested Illinois communities to contact them.
