Bill calls for re-sale regulations

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A bill before the Indiana legislature would put strict new rules on stores that buy and sell used goods.

The measure, SB 507, is meant to prevent thieves from selling stolen goods to secondhand stores.

Under the bill, such stores would have to keep a log of what items they buy and from whom they buy them. They would also have to take photographs of those selling the items as well as each item purchased.

Stores would also have to hold the purchased goods for several days before putting them on the shelf for sale.

Supports of the measure say the requirements would help track and prevent the sale of stolen goods.

Still, some re-sale stores say the requirements would put an undue strain on their employees and customers, a strain they say they may not be able to afford.
