a life saving program. we introduced you to "erin withers" last year. she's a terre haute mother -- with "2" severely autistic children. withers is the founder of project lifesaver in vigo county. news 10's kiley thomas is live -- to explain how the program is changing her family's life! /////////// a typical morning like today -- erin withers can rest easy. she now knows that her "2" autistic children could quickly be found if they wandered away. unfortunately -- this is a reality erin was used to. her "6" year old daughter -- wh lives with non-verbal autistim -- frequently ran away. just take a look at this video! this is cell phone footage her mom shot -- of lillian trying to escape. just the day before this video was taken -- she did get away -- in fact a mile away from home. her mom found her with a stranger.. who had thankfully pulled over to wait with the 6 year old. [g16]project lifesaver update 1-sot vo "i think a lot could have been different -- i think the drive for that whole thing is that somebody could have taken her.. and done whatever they wanted to her. and even if she was found nobody would have known because she wouldn't be able to tell them" we aired the video on "news 10" "withers" says after people saw it -- local law enforcement fully funded project life saver! it's a group effort between terre haute police.. fire department.. and the vigo county sheriffs office. the program allows police to track participants -- like lillian at any time. we'll break down what's happened since the program started in october! it may even be saving you -- the taxpayer. that's coming up in our next 30 minutes. live -- kt news 10. we'll get mainly sunny day - highs get into the low 40s. program that's "saving time" -- and "potentially lives"! that's thanks -- to one local woman who inspired the cause. we're talking about "project lifesaver". news 10's kiley thomas is live to fill us in -- on its success! /////////// a local mom fought for this program for "3" years! now -- it's paying off. we are happy to announce -- police have yet to use it to search for a lost child or adult. which is the goal at the end of the day! here's how it works -- it's a tracking device for children or adults to wear -- who suffer from autism.. alzheimers.. or dimentia. they wear this bracelet and can be tracked immediately by law enforcement. it costs "5-thousand" dollars for the county to participate. that's for all the equipment too. families who need it -- pay "20" a month for the g-p-s bracelet. but for "erin withers" -- there's no pricetag she can put on the safety of her "2" children with severe autism. her battle to spread the program -- is far from over. "i think some of these smaller counties need to be more open minded and look at the bigger picture because if you can't afford project lifesaver how can you afford searching for these people? because it's way more expensive to do that" if you -- or someone you know -- is interested in signing up. we've listed how to do so on our website at wthi tv dot com. live -- kt news 10. people in "austin, texas" -- ar living "in fear" this
