Arrests up 20 percent in Sullivan County

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Arrests are on the rise in one Wabash Valley County.

Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom says the arrest numbers in 2017 were up 20 percent over 2016.

In total, there were 962 arrests in Sullivan County for the year.

Cottom says 239 people were arrested for drug-related crimes, 226 for theft, and 200 people for operating while intoxicated.

The sheriff says there are 54 "fixed beds" with an additional 20 polymer beds.

When the jail population goes over 74, jail staff use cots.

Cottom said they are renovating the jail's showers.

Sullivan County Arrests by Year 

2013:  797 – arrests.
2014:  729 – arrests.
2015:  829 – arrests.
2016:  880 – arrests.
2017: 962 – arrests.
