Your health may be the last thing on your mind when you grab a shopping cart.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Your health may be the last thing on your mind when you grab a shopping cart.

When you go shopping, it's probably the first thing you instinctively grab.

However, experts say more than just simple bacteria and germs could be covering your cart.

The scary fact is that drug residue could be on carts as well.

With the rising opioid epidemic, it's not out of the question.

Wabash Valley first responders have warned of the drug Fentanyl.

The drug is so powerful it can be deadly to touch. It can also be absorbed through the air.

This could put you and your family at risk if you come across it unexpectedly.

Some shoppers have not even thought about it.

"I never even thought as drugs as being to where you could... pick them up," said Evelyn Hays, a frequent shopper at Baesler's Market.

Many put their children in the cart and don't think twice about it.

Baesler's Market suggests customers wipe down their carts before using them.

"It really is pretty amazing that just about every customer that grabs a cart does get the wipes out and cleans the carts. So... our customers help us take care of them," said Kristine O'Hare, Basler's Market Marketing associate.

So far there have been no reports of drug residue found at local stores on carts.

Authorities just want shoppers to be aware.
